Following the latest heightened tension between Israeli regime and Palestinians in Gaza Strip, United Nations Security Council issued a statement to express concern about protection of civilians.
“The Security Council members called for de-escalation of the situation, restoration of calm, and reinstitution of the November 2012 ceasefire,” Rwandan envoy Eugene Richard Gasana who is rotating president of the Council in July said. November 2012 truce was brokered by Egypt to end eight days of Israeli aggressions against besieged enclave of Gaza.
Ambassador Gasana expressed serious concern regarding the crisis and protection and welfare of civilians.
“The Security Council members further called for respect for international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians,” he added.
Latest UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) states that people in Gaza “continue to suffer as heavy airstrikes, death, injuries and damage to infrastructure continues to take its toll on everyday life.”
UNSC has encouraged the two sides to resume direct negotiations to reach a comprehensive peace deal based on two-state solution.
In recent conflict, Israeli forces have carried out hundreds of raids on Gaza killing over 150 people including children, wounding hundreds of civilians. They have also arrested over one thousand Palestinians.
